[atrb=cellspacing,0,table][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,450,true] | [bg=996054] There was an eerie quite over the morning, even more so than usual. So eerie, in fact, that Babycakes shuddered as she walked out the mouth of the burrow that spring morning. The entire plane of the Kalahari seemed to be lying still in some sort of wait, pretense to some awful trap that was about to be set off. The birds were silent in their usual chorus, and a smell rather foreign wafted in the air in a choking miasma. What was this? Babycakes stood frozen in her steps. Her statued form giving insight to the own horrors that filtered through her eyes, for the stretch of world out in front of her seemed to be world no longer. It was like winter, but with a much more sinister background. The meerkat was left speechless. The smell that would have been the aftershowers of the night before was masked by the thick smell that the meerkat could not have recognized, but the smell that was ultimately charred flesh and root. And though she could not name it, a brushfire had swept through the Kalahari while she stirred in her ignorant sleep, and now things were more dead that they had ever been before.
She disappeared back into the burrow to see if her family was even there.

As a sudden flow of cold swept over her when one of her mob mates got up and moved away Lola flickered her eyes open and growled slightly, turning over in her bed, and accident stepping on Mouse's tail. He didn't wake up, which was good. Waiting for a few seconds, in silence Lola wondered what the other female, identified as Babycakes was doing up there. She returned quickly. Standing up, well crouching as the den was to small to stand inside it Lola stood face to face to the meerkat and smiled slightly, a small twinkle in her eye. "Mornin' Babycakes. Scared to go out I see? Would you like me to come and hold your paw?" She mocked, as she tried to hold away the sarcasm in her tongue. Not waiting for an answer Lola slid past Babycakes, and out into the mouth of the den freezing in her tracks immediately as she looked around. Ash littered the sand, inches thick. There was no sun, only a thick cloud of smouldering smoke and the scent that flowed into her nostrils made her eyes water and her throat gag. She had experienced many bushfire's in her life, but none as bad as this. Had the Misfire mob experienced this horrific natal disaster as well? Lola somewhat hoped so, as then it would finally mean they would stop fighting with their rivals and had the upper hand. Swallowing hard Lola turned around and padded back down. "I think we have a problem..." She rasped.

[atrb=cellspacing,0,table][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,450,true] | [bg=996054] Out of the dark comfort of the burrow, Lola slipped out of the confines. Babycakes stared as mocking words escaped the female's mouth. She scoffed and laughed in her disgust. She trailed after the female and too stood at the burrow's edge, and too stared at the sky. Babycakes rose an eyebrow, amused to hear what Lola had to say. "Think we have a problem?" she recited after the other had finished. "It doesn't take much thought to realize that," she smiled in a tell-all way, her voice babying, purposely taunting in feigned methods of talking to someone much younger. A seriousness suddenly fell over her, knowing the dire state they were in. She knew that Lola was right, it was simply obvious. Babycakes was at a loss. Everything seemed to be dead. "I think we've got the Kalahari to ourselves. Those Misfires. Let's get them while their weak." She had no notion of what she was doing, no notion of what she was suggesting. But it seemed the only thing she could think of was to secure their livelihood. Taking out the Misfires was a part of that. "Where's the dominant?" she turned to Lola, wanting to know if the ranks were still secure. "Who's even alive?"

"The dominants...what, Orestes and Rhine? Wasn't it?" Lola murmured, her sentence more of a jumble of words barely strung together. Babycakes was right in the sense of the Misfire mob. They had terrorised them for too long now. Although Lola once had a fling with Houdini their dominant male the subordinate had to clue, and didn't care for his wellbeing. He was bait, gone. Her scars had healed, when her pups died. "Attack them while their weak." She repeated, her tongue gently licking her lips, trying to get moisture of her fur. Lola had never liked Babycakes. She didn't like the way that the other subordinate was always contradicting herself, or exacerbating things when Lola thought they were going well. "Houdini is strong, but he has no female. No mate." She chirped, her eyes blinking as she fought back a sneeze that was trying to break free. Her past life would be gone now, trapped in the chasms of the past. A new kat would break free now, a strong one. A kat that would do anything to save her mob, her family. Though, she would still be as cheeky as ever. The past was behind her, her and Babycakes would have to put their differences behind them in order to survive. An unknown future lied ahead, and she was ready to go down the lane to lead her either to glory, or to death.

[atrb=cellspacing,0,table][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,450,true] | [bg=996054] "So," Babycakes started, "What do we do?" The question was more rhetorical that anything else, seeing as such the desolate world they were in, there could be no answer. Things were going to be even more difficult than either of the females could have anticipated. "We ought to get out of here," she murmured. "Got to migrate to some place where the land isn't black. And I'm not waiting for the rest of them to wake up. And you, you'll either follow or you won't. I'm not waiting here for my death." Babycake's logic saw it as a simple choice: do it or don't. There were only two outcomes: live or die. This wasn't a game anymore, and she wasn't going to take her chances. She knew what she had to do. Though incoherent and a bit scattered, a ragged set of machinations were coming together in a peculiar amalgamation. She was intent on a fate of staying alive.

Lola watched her fellow subordinate make up her mind, and just stood there watching. She was right. They had to move, but surely they should wait for their mob members or at least another few of the males? They weren't related to any of them- and in anew mob they would need pups. "I will come with you." Lola chirped, exiting the mouth of the burrow and supporting herself on her hind legs and tail. "We should at least wake up Cosmo. He isn't related to any of us..." She murmured jumping slightly as footsteps came up behind her. "Am I missing something?" Came a small shaky voice. Lola turned around to see Mouse and Cosmo standing their, their mouthed agape and their eyes watering as they look in what appeared around them. "What happened?" Cosmo asked, swallowing hard and grooming some still falling ash from his pelt. It tasted bitter, sour and made his mouth dry and his teeth feel funny. Mouse was just tracing his claws through the inch thick ash, creating light lines and small patches of sand. Lola watched the males interested, flanked by Babycakes. "Perfect.." She whispered into the other subirdinate's ears. "We are going to go to a new land. Orestes and Rhine, and Rhapsie are dead." She chirped. "You coming?"

[atrb=cellspacing,0,table][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,450,true] | [bg=996054] A grin spread across the lips of the female. It wasn't a grin of pure happiness and joy, but a slightly malicious grin with malicious intent. There were two males and two females. These were the remnants of the Starcross. They once had been a large mob, once had been the best mob, so powerful and so successful, so what had they been reduced to? Nothing. They were nothing now. Babycakes grimaced at the thought of the struggles that would be ahead. And grimaced at the thought of having to rebuild the entire empire. At least this time she had a chance to be its queen. "Let's go," she muttered loud enough for all to hear. She knew Lola would also be one to try and scrabble for the throne, and she knew there would be some face-off, though, to what extent, she could not tell as of yet. "Let's go find a new home. And some food." There was a desolate mood over the Kalahari, its emptiness now more prominent than ever. Babycakes moved off into a scurry, paws almost cautious on the black ground. She looked to the others, the rest of her mob, and a feeling of dread grew in the pit of her stomach. They were definitely in trouble.

Lola noticed the subordinates' grin, as did the two males who seemed to cringe at the idea. They were more like brothers weren't they? Licking her lips and letting out a small yawn Lola closed her eyes shut and sneezed, sending a cloud of ash up into the air. They would need to survive, they would need to live. The mob, Orestes the leader were all in the past now. Gone like the sand. "We should attack the misfires. Get them while they are weak. Maybe collect any stragglers that would like to immigrate." She chirped. Maybe Houdini is still alive, maybe he wants to join us. His mob is fewer than ours, and February was not exactly the healthiest meerkat alive so we have the upper hand.. she thought to herself. Mouse and Cosmo seemed to agree, while they were still looking around.

[atrb=cellspacing,0,table][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,450,true] | [bg=996054] "It seems," Babycakes began with a shine in her eye, "That we have a collective decision to take down a common enemy." She had a grin twitching at her lips. She drew her tongue across pointed teeth and leathery lips. "And we will rise to the occasion, and we will be great. The greatest mob," she dragged her eyes over every one of them, "In the Kalahari." She finished with a slight smile, and turned heel. She moved over the terrain with the hopes that others would follow on instinct, making the lead calls that marked the rights of the dominant. She cared none, if she was intruding on some undecided title, had no one else claimed it, so it could well be hers, should well be hers. There were no arguments against it, were there?

Narrowing her chocolate brown eyed slightly Asher subordinate equal started making lead calls, Lola hurried after Babycakes. They were in the same boat here at the moment. And that was rare. Lola had liked nobody, nobody but herself and possible mates and she would not let any female tread over her. She wanted power, and this was her opportunity. Babycakes was a cliché and would get in her way. She needed some way to, get rid of her. Not, death. Well, maybe not but something. She was true though, they would become the greatest mob to exist and many meerkats will come from far away in hope to join. With the Misfire's down, anything could happen, although no one knew of the blow the fire has caused them. For all Babycakes and Lola knew they could still be fully in tact. Turning around and chirping at Cosmo and Mouse who stood there, not knowing which female to follow the males rather reluctantly followed Lola, flanked my Babycakes into the enemies territory.
